what do you do when you're assisting? I'm 16 and I organize, clean, play with the kids, take them outside, supervise naptime, etc. What sorts of things do you do? I'm just interested to see if it's the same sort of things. And also, what do you feel you're best at at your job. I feel like I'm really good at keeping the classroom organized.

  1. I assist the teacher with helping the kids spell out their names, write numbers, count objects, help them use the scissors. I supervise during art time. I also help them tie their shoes, watch over them during recess, help with snack time/clean up. I also talk to them and ask them about their day. I love talking to them and hearing their many stories. They sure do talk a lot!:) They are such a joy to be around.

  2. well, when i started working out a a teacher assistant, i had no teachers to look up to. i had to basically observe the other teachers do their stuff and i learn in that way. i practically had the whole nursery 2 class to myself. and cover the duties of a teacher.

but well, for 16, i guess you are covering a wide scope of duties. it seems you're enjoying yourself. that's the mostimportant thing when we work with children. good luck..

  3. Mostly it sounds like you are doing all the right things. I am a preschool teacher and I like having my assistant get a little more involved in the leading of the class after she becomes more comfortable. My assistant does circle time, an art project, and a theme lesson once a week. Every day, she does story time. It is important to me that the kids see her as their teacher too. It also helps when a substitute is needed, the assistant knows how to do everything and can. that way, the sub is their to assist the assistant. It keeps the classroom flowing much smoother and allows for less interruption in the routine for the kids.

  4. It sounds like you are doing a great job!  I am a lead teacher in a three year old room as well as going to school to become certified.  I love having sit down time with the kids when we sing, reherse nursery rhymes, crafts, and centers.  I feel like these are the things that I am best at doing.  I love thinking of new crafts and decorating the room.  If you have any questions or need suggestions you can email me at mobz907@yahoo.com.

Good luck and enjoy your job!  It's a lot of fun and very rewarding.  :)
