Has anyone had experience with LEAP (Learning Experiences - An Alternative Program? It is for Preschoolers and Parents. It teaches very young children with autism alongside children without Autism spectrum disorders.

The other children are trained to help each child with an autism spectrum disorder meet individually designed objectives.

If you have experience with this program can you tell me more about it? If you are a parent of a child with Autism or a parent of a child without Autism, can you tell me your thoughts of your child in a program like this?

  1. I not sure if you have the correct information about LEAP.

The LEAP program is designed to to increase the students independence in communication, vocational skills, daily living skills etc, where the teaching is structured using specialized teachers, speech therapist, occupation & physical therapists and other services.

As far as I am aware other students are "not trained" to help children with Autism, (to do so is risky, and can open up litigation if a child was hurt), but the "normal children" (for want of a better word) are certainly capable to interact, and model behaviours through directed supportive play, within the normal pre-school programs or activities. And there should be a teacher and assistant present at all times, and the lesson plan or activities planned in advance, with backup support when and where needed.

This program is to help the Autistic child to eventually enter mainstream schooling, but the other children who interact with the the Autistic child learn tolerance and patience of others.

I have included some links which give more information on the programs. I hope this helps.

  2. I have a 23-year-old with autism and I would not have been happy with it. Little kids are not qualified to be in charge of other little kids. They can be in the same classroom together, but everybody should stay as an individual. No teams where one student is perceived as superior to another.
