Prescription lenses in sunglasses?

I have very bad eyesight (one is -5 the other is -6) and I was told I cannot get my lenses (something about index) in the kinda sunglasses I want ( I want the MASSIVE ones / ray ban aviators) , I cant wear contact lenses at all so I need to know if theres anywhere or anyway I can get strong prescription massive sunglasses ?!

  1. Usually it can be technically done, but the lenses will be exceptionally expensive and thick and heavy.

    So it is very strongly advised against, as people are rarely happy after they've had it done.

    There are ways out:

    Some of the most curved sunglasses, especially sports models (examples below) can have an RX clip which sits behind the large sunglass lenses, though it will show, unless the tint is quite dark.

    Although it's more often done with diving masks, it *can* also be possible to bond a smaller Rx lens to the back of a larger non-prescription glass lens.  That would be a specialist and expensive route, and restrict the choice of frames and lenses considerably.

    -6.00 isn't that terrible, (I get to -13.50) but on a large lens the edge thickness will increase rapidly.


  2. technically they will make perscription lenses into sunglasses...but yes they should be able to fit lenses into most common sunglass frames. specialty optometrists can do it..I always had mine made in Singapore...the guy at the shop I went to would cut and mold them himself...
