Do your solicitors customarily hang their "shingles" outside the building where their office is located as our lawyers do in the US?  

A "shingle"  is an elegant sign containing their name and title such as Joe Bloke, Attorney-at-Law or in your friend's case it would read, Solicitor if this is common practice across the pond.  Would be another congratulatory statement of your delight at his/her new position in life and just as traditional as the usual briefcase.
