  1. Maybe something like Claytime Cafe (a place to paint pottery as a family).

How about his own savings bond?

How about a donation through kiva.org in his name?

  2. What is up with the original birth certificate comments? I don't get it. Anyways I really like the idea of a board game. Or a gift certificate to a place they can go and enjoy like a miniature golf place or the movies!

  3. the original birth certificate!

otherwise, maybe a subscription to a magazine that the whole family could enjoy

  4. nice photo album

  5. I would look up the latest new upcoming kids movie and design a family date for them with movie passes, a gift card to their son's favorite restaurant, and an offer to babysit siblings (if applicable).

    Have fun at the party!

  6. Mabey a board game or a movie..Something the family can do together and spend some time getting to know one another.

  7. I'm sure you'll get lots of very good suggestions that fit the usual ideas for gifts, so I'm going to suggest something a little different.  Talk to the adoptive parents about making sure they have a copy of his original birth certificate if they don't already have it.  Although it is his birth certificate, and he can have legal access to it now, as soon as the adoption finalizes, it will be sealed.  (A new one will be issued, but it will be altered.  It won't be the same as the original. It won't have the actual facts related to his birth on it.)  It will remain sealed, even from him, unless he lives in one of the six states that allows access to all adopted citizens who are adults.  Otherwise, he will likely not be able to access it again, no matter his age.  He is only 11 now, and probably doesn't think much about things like birth certificates.  One day, however, he may like to have his own factual certificate of birth, just like non-adopted citizens can have.   This will help ensure that he does have it, if he wants it someday.

  8. His birth certificate.  Before they seal it on finalization of the adoption.
