President of FIVB visits Dominican Republic - Volleyball update
Mr Jizhong Wei, the president of the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) is currently on a visit to the Dominican Republic where the headquarters of North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) are situated. The presence
of Wei marks an inspection visit of the facilities that are being used and operated by the faederation.
During the inspection visit, Wei was also accompanied by other prominent figures that include Cristobal Marte Hoffiz who is the FIVB's 1st Executive Vice President as well as the President of NORCECA.
Wei visit to the Dominican Republic is not restricted to inspections, he will also be involved in other activities that include the Confederation Congress which is scheduled to be held on 6th October and last until 8th October.
NORCECA is a non profit organisation that has authority over all volleyball related activities in the region. In all, NORCECA comprises a total of 35 countries in its zone. One of the prime activities of the confederation is to stage qualifying events for
the Olympic Games that are held every two years. The origins of NORCECA can be traced back to 1966, when the Caribbean and Central American Games were held in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The FIVB president has been busy with other activities as well as he was given the title of the Guest of Honour in a ceremony that took place at City Hall. The title was bestowed upon Wei by the Municipality of Santo Domingo on the 30th September.
Wei gave the following statements after having received the honour: “I receive this honor on behalf of my colleagues of FIVB and the Volleyball and Beach Volleyball family. This is not for me but for all the players around the world. I want to congratulate
the government of the city of Santo Domingo for its support to volleyball and beach volleyball.”
Jizhong Wei was handed over the presidency of the FIVB in 2008 when Dr. Ruben Acosta retired from the job after giving 24 years of his life to the organization.
