President of NORCECA Medical Commission passes away – Volleyball news
Dr Andrés Vinicio Piña Del Rosario bid farewell to life on Sunday, April 1 in Dominican Republic. The deceased was a member of FIVB Medical Commission and he also held the office of President of North & Central America, and Caribbean Federation (NORCECA).
A close friend of Dr Andres’ family and Executive Director of NORCECA, Professor Nelson Ramirez, informed that his death has been caused by pulmonary edema which is a kind of cardiac arrest.
Dr Piña was a graduate from University of Santo Domingo. He earned his degree in Medical Faculty of the Autonomous at USD and then moved to France.
Afterwards, he came back to Dominican Republic in 2008 and associated with Dominican Republic Armed Forces and National Police Sport Circle. He served as a colonel for the Dominican Republic Air Force and also devoted his time for the Olympic Committee of
Dominican Republic.
He was selected as a member of the FIVB Medical Commission in Dominican and served in this role for more than 10 years. Meanwhile, he worked as control committee member for many volleyball and beach volleyball events. In the recent memory, he attended the
2011 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Cup in Japan.
The President of International Volleyball Federation, Jizhong Wei, was great saddened by the loss of an important entity of FIVB. He offered his heartiest condolence to the friends and family of Dr Piña del Rosario.
In his comments, Wei stated, “Dr Piña del Rosario will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him and worked with him. He will be remembered by the volleyball family for all his hard work as a member of the FIVB Medical Commission, president of the NORCECA
Medical Commission and a medical delegate at competitions.”
Likewise, the FIVB 1st executive vice-president and NORCECA president Cristobal Marte Hoffiz shared the similar thoughts. He said, “We are in shock after learning the terrible news. Dr Piña was part of the volleyball family and a loved member of the NORCECA
fraternity. He will be sorely missed.”
