President of Volleyball England honoured with OBE award – Volleyball News
In the recent memory, the President of the Volleyball England Richard Callicott received an OBE (Order of the British Empire) award in the honour of Queen’s Birthday.
He settled for the accolade on account of his outstanding services to British Volleyball for several years. In the wake of 2012 London Olympic Games, this is indeed great news for Volleyball England. Callicott was pleased to accept the honour.
The Chief Executive Officer of Scottish Volleyball and also the CEV Board of Administration member, Margaret Ann Fleming, congratulated Callicott for the OBE award. MAF stated, "This is wonderful news for British Volleyball especially as we are now days
away from the London 2012 Olympics. It is wonderful that Richard has been recognized by the Queen for his magnificent contribution to volleyball. And everyone in British Volleyball would like to congratulate Richard on this fantastic achievement and in recognition
of his services to our great sport"
Likewise, the Chief Executive of Volleyball England Lisa Wainwright called it a great achievement for Callicott.
Callicott has been attached to volleyball for a long time. He has held different administrative positions and has worked for the betterment of indoor, beach, and sand volleyball in the United Kingdom. He laid the foundation of Sandwell Volleyball Tournament
in the 80’s, which turned out to be a huge success. It became the world’s biggest volleyball tournament when a total of 420 teams participated in it. The Sandwell Volleyball Tournament also made its way to the Guinness Book of World Records and won the IOC
‘Sport for All’ award. Callicott was the main person behind the success of Sandwell Volleyball Tournament.
Moreover, he held the office of the Chief Executive of UK Sport and proved his endeavours. In an acknowledgement to his services in sports administration, he was awarded with the esteemed Emlyn Jones Award. For almost a decade (1990-99), he performed his
duties as the Director of Sport for the National Indoor Arena of Sport in England.
Currently, he is the President of Volleyball England and the Chairman of the Commonwealth Volleyball Federation.
All in all, Callicott has done a lot to help the sport of volleyball to develop and grow in the region. He truly deserved to be awarded with the Order of British Empire.
