Preston Campbell wraps up his National Rugby League career
The Gold Coast Titans’ Preston Campbell has announced on Friday, August 5, that he will finish off his fourteen-year playing career from the National Rugby League (NRL) as the current season wraps up. This decision has been made only to take up a more important
role for the Titans in the following season.
When inquired about his decision pertaining to retirement, Campbell added, "If there are any doubts it was the fact that we have a new-look team with younger blokes next year and the only doubt was if I was too old.”
Many observed that it seems as if he Campbell is experiencing a change of hear, which was also confirmed by the chief executive of Titans, Michael Searle. While commenting on Campbell’s decision regarding the NRL quit, Searle stated, "We are pretty close
and I had a rough feeling that he was (about to change his mind). He is the sort of bloke who takes every day as it comes. And he has made up his mind that the time is right to move on to the next phase of his life.”
It was further added by Searle that he will support Campbell’s career decision despite the fact that he would like to extend his stay with them. He added that it is useless to talk to Campbell because he has made up his mind.
Also, it was mentioned by Searle that it is a moment of pride for Campbell, which is savoured by very few in the world of sports, as he is taking his retirement decision on his own. It was also anticipated that Campbell will change his mind regarding the
retirement as he had already gone back on his decision twice.
As Titans is full of fresh blood, who are aspiring to learn the craft from the veteran on board, it was speculated that Campbell would stay back in order to train the future Titans but his decision was against expectations.
However, it has been confirmed that Campbell is only retiring from his playing career to be able to coach the new inductions from next year onwards. He feels that to be a Titan is a lot more than just playing football.
