Preston North End win against Leeds United
Preston came back from 1-4 down to beat Leeds 6-4 in a thrilling game in the Championship at Elland Road.
Preston started the game well with Jon Parkin scoring the first goal of the match for the visitors. Parkin fired his side into the lead from close range.
Leeds came back and scored two headed goals. Luciano Becchio scored the first goal from George McCartney’s cross and Alex Bruce put the home side into the lead after Sean St Ledger’s poor clearance.
David Somma scored a brace to put Leeds 4-1 up and the home side looked to be cruising. His first goal was deflected in. The South African scored his second after he cut inside from the left and hammered a shot past Andy Lonergan.
However, Parkin gave Preston some hope when he fired in a low shot to the bottom left hand corner of the Leeds net after bursting through on goal. The teams went in at half-time with Leeds 4-2 up.
Keith Treacy pulled back another goal for Preston after he scored from a corner. Leeds looked increasingly nervous and it was no surprise when Preston scored to stage an incredible comeback. Bruce gave away a penalty and Callum Davidson converted from the
spot to make it 4-4.
Parkin put the visitors into the lead after the hour and scored his hat-trick by blasting in a half volley to put Preston 5-4 in front.
Iain Hume completed a stunning second half display when he flicked in a wonderful diagonal ball from Billy Jones.
Darren Ferguson was ecstatic after the game. “I have never been involved in such an amazing game. But all credit to my players for their sensational comeback. It's brilliant to get six goals; it would have been nice if we had not conceded four. But all credit
goes to my players.”
"The spirit and character was remarkable, the boys were magnificent and I am incredibly proud of the team," Ferguson added.
Leeds manager Simon Grayson said “I still had a go at the players at half-time, because we had given them far too many opportunities. When we were 4-1 up, we needed to be more professional but we gave them a chance to get back into the game.”
“There were far too many errors – both individually and collectively. We made stupid mistakes and it cost us. To lose 6-4 at home is unbelievable really, and embarrassing."
