Question:

Preventing UTI's?

I have a UTI and I don't ever want to get another one! Someone told me that once you have one they tend to keep coming back but you can prevent them by taking bilberry capsules every day. Is this true? Does anybody know of any natural preventatives?

  1. Bilberry is actually really good for the eyes, but the other answerer is right that it won't help UTIs much at all. Some of the main things that help include:

-Cranberry capsules that are often taken at least in 800 mg doses or concentrates that are comparative, but you can also take higher doses safely.

-D-Mannose, which can either be taken in capsules (around 700 mg) for maintenance or in powder form (often 5 gram doses) for intensive doses.

-Juniper Berry, Corn Silk, Uva Ursi, and/or most of the B vitamins also help for overall Urinary Tract health and Kidney health... but no where near as much as Cranberry or D-Mannose. You could probably find some combination of these, but any supplement bottle with these in it would be about as effective to keep your Urinary Tract healthy in general.

    Good luck!

  2. I'm not sure about bilberries, but I know a product called D-Mannose is supposed to help prevent and treat UTI's.

I think you take around 500mg per day?

D-Mannose is something that is found in cranberries (which also help prevent UTI's) but it's much more concentrated in supplement form.

Also, if you want to take Cranberry Juice, make sure it's 100% pure, not the sugar-laden kind.

  3. Don't believe everything everyone tells you.  I've had UTIs but I haven't had one in years (like 15 years).  If you are prone to them drink plenty of water and take cranberry pills (or drink the juice or tea)

  4. I am the Queen of UTI's. I am very prone to them so i know all about it. Once you have one it is like being raped by a knife. You need to do the following:

    * Drink tons of water on a regular basis

    * Take cranberry extract pills every day (can find at them at the pharmacy)

*Pee regularly and especially right after s*x. Even take a bath or shower if you can after intercourse. Do not have s*x during an infection.

*Wear cotton underwear so your urethra can breath.

*Don't wear super tight jeans, it will irritate it the area.

    * Drink Cranberry juice (WITHOUT sugar, mix with water so it isn't so sour)

*Stay away from sugar and caffeine. Especially during infection.

*If you get a bladder infection go immediately to hospital to get tested and receive the prescription. Take as directed.

*Don't hold your pee. If you have to go then go.

*If you have infection when you pee you need to make sure to try and squeeze every last drop out, so you can get as much of the bacteria out of you. (I know the end of peeing is the worst, but you just have to power through it)

*When infection is present, the bacteria will double every twenty minutes, so you need to be hydrated enough so that you are peeing every 5 to 10 minutes.

*Uva Ursi is a good supplement to take as well. It makes the walls of your urinary tract more slippery so that bacteria can't cling on.

*Get consulted by a vitamin guru, Ayurveda specialist, and urologist/doctor.

*Take good care of yourself, and don't run yourself into the ground.
