Preview: Betfair Yorkshire St Leger final
The £8000 Betfair Yorkshire St Leger Final will be raced at Doncaster on Tuesday. The group in the 661m final was selected after two preliminary rounds of races.
In trap one is Ballymac Rumble. He finished in first place in the first round of the Yorkshire Leger heats, but then followed that up with a third place finish. He ended up 11½ lengths behind Droopys Belletti after stumbling at the start of the race. Barring
another stumble, Rumble has a good chance of a top three finish, but it’s highly unlikely he’ll win the race.
Pennys Genesis is the biggest long shot of the race, currently at 16-1. He finished in second place in both the first round and the semi-finals. He rarely finishes outside of the top three, but the competition in this race is much greater than what he’s
used to. He’ll race from trap two.
In trap three is the other long shot of the race, Frisby Fontenblu. He’s sitting at 14-1 right now after back-to-back third place finishes. In the semi-final, he led from the traps before dropping back to third place as he neared the finish line.
Bower Hawk was second in his first round heat, and won his semi-final in the Yorkshire Leger. After a slow start, Hawk poured it on in the second half of the race, moving up from fifth to first. He won that race over Carbarns Tom by 2¼ lengths. He’ll be
expected to challenge for top spot in this race, and he’ll race from the fourth trap.
In trap five is Droopys Belletti. He’s won both of his Yorkshire Leger races so far. He narrowly beat Penskey John in the opening round, but then crushed the field in the semi-final, winning by 8½ lengths over Pennys Genesis. The competition in this race
will be tougher than his semi-final, but he’s still a heavy favourite at 10-11. Belletti is one of two hounds in this race trained by Charlie Lister, who is second behind Seamus Cahill in the Trainers Championship standings. Lister has a history of winning
big races, and this race stands a good chance of being added to that list.
The other hound in this race trained by Lister is Carbarns Tom, who will race from trap six. He finished third in the opening round, and took second behind Bower Hawk in his semi-final. His wins are few and far between, the last one coming on 2 November
and the one before that on 19 July. He rarely seems to be in the lead and typically gets off to poor starts. Still, Tom could find himself in second or third in this race.
Best Bet: The odds don’t pay very much, but Droopys Belletti is very likely to win the Yorkshire St Leger final. If you’re looking to bet on second place, or are just looking for a longshot in this race, then Carbarns Tom could be the hound for you. Not
only is he trained by Lister, but he’s racing from the sixth trap. If Bower Hawk and Belletti interfere with each other, Tom could find himself ahead of the pack.
