Preview of Wimbledon, 2010
An eccentric week of tennis tournament ended up surprisingly with Lleyton Hewitt winning a match against Roger Federer in the final of the ATP tour in Halle. Such an unpredictable incidence has happened just a week prior to the start of Wimbledon 2010. What was even more startling about that victory was that Hewitt managed to beat the tennis master in spite of the fact that the Australian was defeated by the Swiss star in all of their last fifteen clashes. As a result of this loss, Federer’s name has been added to the list of players who have faced setbacks while moving ahead on London SW19.
On the other hand, Feliciano Lopez, the Spaniard defeated the number one seeded Rafael Nadal in the quarter final match in London. In the Queen’s Club, Andy Murray, Andy Roddick as well as Novak Djokovic also joined Nadal. However, Federer loosing the title after five years at Halle was the greatest setback of the week beyond any doubt.
Croatia’s Mario Ancic is another name who defeated Nadal on grass at the All England Club in 2002 and now Hewitt has also joined the party. On the other hand, Nadal’s loss to Feliciano Lopez also put a full stop on his run of 24 consecutive victories. With that, his 14 match winning streak also ended up on grass.
So who do the defeats distressed most?
Federer will have flinched at Roland Garros, not only because he squandered in the quarterfinal match to Soderling, but with Rafa winning his fifth Roland Garros title, the Spaniard retrieved his World number one position. The number two rank does not go with his image as well as his luxurious sponsorship.
Sadly, Federer missed the chance of setting up a record of making his way into the semi finals of the Grand Slam for 23 times in a row.
It is another immeasurably small fissure in his glory, but it is something that is strengthened the second he enters the doors at Wimbledon.
After all, the man who has snatched the most of the Grand Slam titles is none other than Roger Federer. Out of his sixteen titles, he has won six of them at Wimbledon. However, at the moment, even the fans of the defending champion have failed to explain how the less dangerous tennis players has succeeded in beating the tennis court king.
Even his most ardent fans are at a loss to explain how lesser mortals on a tennis court can go out there and beat him. Nadal though, is an exceptional example, and his record against Roger persists at fourteen victories to Federer’s seven.
These two being number one and two in the world rankings are the key players at Wimbledon and they have played seven Grand Slam Finals, of which Rafael has succeeded in five of them including his 2009 Australian Open as well as the 2008 Wimbledon Final.
On the other hand, Andy Murray who is the number one player in Britain also enjoys a beneficial record over the Swiss, with a 6-5 record. Murray also holds an exciting record against, Juan Martin del Potro (5-1), Andy Roddick (6-3) and Nicolay Davydenko (5-4). However, he is not very good against Djokovic and Rafa. The British spectators will be once again hoping for a wonderful display of sport from their number one tennis star.
The final factor is the weather in Britain. The players on the centre Court with a roof will not be affected by the weather conditions however, the game would be a little harder for the players on the outside court.
Nadal, Federer along with the William’s sisters will be the key players for at least one to two years on the centre stage.
Centre Court supports the real champions that all of these four players are…but novel things are occurring in the game of professional tennis.
