Previewing the Copa America candidates – Analysing group C: Special Feature (Part 3)
After elaborating on Chile’s chances of winning the Copa America by analysing their squad, it is time to take a look at some of the other teams in Group C...
Peru
Perhaps the weakest team in Group C, Peru will need a miraculous display in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Uruguay-c3035, Chile and Mexico are their opponents in Group C which makes it quite difficult for Peru to actually even gain a win during the group stages. Moreover their squad is limited to say the least in light of recent injuries.
Peru play a 3-5-2 formation which is susceptible to fast counter attacks something that both http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chile-c2871 specialize in with their speedy forwards. In historical perspective, Peru have never been giants in South American football but they have had some success in Copa America. The South American minnows won the competition in 1939 and 1975. They finished fourth in 1997 and have also secured a third place finish six times in their history in Copa America.
Peru have dwindled down the footballing ladder in South http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/South-Africa-c757 further complicated the problems that have plagued Peru’s football. Thus the South American underdogs will most likely use Copa America as a source of preparation and practice for their upcoming FIFA 2014 World Cup qualification campaign.
Goalkeeping
Leao Butrón, Raúl Fernandez, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Brazil-c2858, he is incredibly agile and fast on the ground which often gives him an edge in one-on-one situations. However as he has played his whole professional career in the Peruvian first division, he is short on experience at the European level.
Defence
Christian Ramos, Alberto Rodríguez, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Carlos-Zambrano-c8566 and Rovoredo play on the wings which will be essential for Peru if they want to attack with width in their 3-5-2 formation.
Midfield
Peru’s midfield is probably their most powerful department as they are blessed with the presence of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michael-Guevara-c25305 in the centre of the park. Vargas is the standout star of Peru’s team and his performances will be a key feature for them if they want to progress past the group stages.
Strikers
Peru’s experienced campaigner http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Paolo-Guerrero-c29087 and Irven Ávila are Peru’s offensive options. Although none of them are good enough to make up of Pizzaro, Guerrero will be the first choice pick and Peru’s offensive hopes will rest on his shoulders.
