The Genoa chief has revealed that the deal for the striker risked collapsing many times, but it was the impeccable behaviour of the Giallorossi that saved the day.
Enrico Preziosi has heaped praise on AS Roma for handling the complex affair regarding Mattia Destro’s deal, and has stressed that he has been left impressed by the club’s integrity.
The capital outfit were in the contention of the young striker who was co-owned by Genoa and Siena, and the negotiations went close to the tipping point at many stages taking twists and turns like a soap opera.
The Rossoblu boss had earlier threatened the youngster that he would have to stay at Genoa for a €400,000 per season contract, if he stalls his negotiations with the Giallorossi.
Preziosi was adamant that the threat was only meant for a positive effect, and stressed that the only purpose of the statement was to encourage the player’s deal with AS Roma, with whom the co-owners already had an agreement.
The Genoa President admitted that the deal was near to falling off the cliff at many stages, and insisted that the credit goes to the Giallorossi for saving it time and again.
The Rossoblu chief went on to praise Walter Sabatini for his conviction on the matter, and insisted that it is a rare occurrence in football that promises are met.
While talking to the press, the Genoa patron said:
“Roma and director Walter Sabatini deserve compliments for their behaviour. The transfer risked collapsing many times, but in football it can happen that someone gives their word and keeps it. That was never more than a positive threat. It was just to kick-start the negotiations, seeing as there was already a deal with Roma that was about to crumble.”
Preziosi went on to stress that the deal may not have gone through had it not been for Sabatini, and revealed that Destro was close to missing out on a move to the Italian giants.
