  1. To my knowledge, there has never been a TV that doesn't support progressive if it has component inputs. LG is no exception. This question only applies to the older picture tube type sets. All LCD, Plasma, DLP, LCoS are progressive. If you have an old CRT (picture tube) set, and you want to verify, check the web site with your model number. If they no longer show it, call a repair shop with your model number and ask them the frequency of the flyback transformer. If it's 15.7 khz, it's not progressive. If it's 30+khz it is. There won't be anything inbetween.

    (technical info)

The regular TV signal, (NTSC 3.58) the basis for DVD, scans 525 lines (480 of which are picture info on DVD) every 1/30th of a second. Progressive has to scan the same 525 lines every 1/60th of a second. If you do the math, you will see that you have to be able to go faster than 15700 lines per second for progressive.

    (cable differences)

yprpb cable is Analog Component video (red/green/blue)(no audio here)(digital component video is Y cB cR)

Y - Green: Carries no "green" information, which is confusing! It carries brightness information (luminance), horizontal sinc information, vertical sinc information and other data required to complete the ATSC, NTSC, Pal, etc. video signal

pR - Red: Carries red color (chromanance) information only

pB - Blue: Carries blue color (chromanance) information only

Green is calculated by the TV, and is not sent as part of the signal.

Audio is either a pair of RCA cables (red/white) or a digital cable (orange) or an optical digital link (square black)

AV cable is Composite video, (yellow red and white) are:

    Yellow: Entire video signal

    Red: Right channel audio

    White: Left channel audio

  2. Post the model name of the TV, I should be able to tell you from that.  That it has a component input does NOT guarantee it is capable of Progressive Scan.  I have seen TVs capable of 1080i but not 480p.  Don't ask my why.

AV cables have three wires.  Stereo sound and one video cable.

Ybr cables have 5 cables (well, some have three).  The video is divided into three wires, which allows for much more info to be sent.  Although a 3 wire Ybr cable might look the same as AV cables, the conductors in Ybr are thicker, and have much better shielding, some they are much less likely to pick up outside interference.

  3. A component input is for progressive scan so yes yor tv will support it. Get the cable from walmart. It will be cheap there.

  4. There is no guarantee that your TV will support progressive input (not without telling us the model), but it is easy to find out.

Connect it with component and  set the player to progressive. If you can see a picture it works!! If not, then set your player back to 480i.

YPbPr is one type of video (or AV) cable. There are other types as well, like composite, s-video, HDMI, etc.
