Question:

Price of Cardboard products vs. Styrofoam?

Recently my school introduced the option of getting "green" recycled cardboard boxes instead of styrofoam ones for takeout food. The only catch is when you get a "green box" you have to pay 50c more. Considering the volume in which these are purchased, the size, and the simplicity of these containers this seems a bit high to me. I feel like they are trying to profit off the awareness and progressiveness that is characteristic of college students. I was hoping someone on here may have some actual figures to confirm my suspicions. Any help will be great! Thanks!

  1. Actually instead of using card board which is also harmful to the environment I would use biodegradable styrofoam. It takes 2 years to break down, unlike traditional styrofoam that take 200 to 500 years. It also costs exactly the same. Cardboard takes a lot of paper and oil to make and also produces more Co2 emissions. Larger food take-out companies have started using them, including McDonald's. You should suggest that to your school does biodegradable styrofoam instead of cardboard. Tyr Earth Shell, google it.
