  1. bout 100

  2. It depends entirely on the brand and type.  If it's a Yamaha or something similiar no more than 100 for closed holed and a little more for open.   If it's a Gemeinhardt (by far the best brand of flutes there is) and it's open-holed sterling silver head probably a couple hundred or more depending on the quality.  Those also come with a gold plated head which would be a little more.  But the last time I got my flute cleaned it cost 100 dollars, so you'd have to subtract that from the cost, which means you'd have a better time selling it if you got it cleaned first.

  3. Depends, as noted, on make and model.  Gemeinhardt, BTW, is FAR from the finest brand; think Haynes or Pearl or Powell.

It also depends on where you shop.  Do you know someone who is knowledgeable about flute who can help you?  Then consider local pawn shops (I bought two Artley student models from a local hock shop for $80 apiece) or go online to:

    http://www.shopgoodwill.com/

    http://www.ebay.com/

http://www.wwbw/com/  (look in their closeout section)

Also check your local newspaper's online classifieds and your local Craig's list.

You probably want to stay away from off-brands like Monique or Cecelio or First Act--these are very cheaply made instruments from places like China and Myanmar; they play OK but are likely to start to fall apart after a few years.  Look for name brands like Bundy, Selmer, Armstrong, Artley, Beuscher, Gemeinhardt, even Buffet.  A beginner model flute of those brands will hold up well under regular use.

  4. It really depends on what type of flute is it (professional, intermediate, beginners), the brand, and what you're going to use it for.  Also it depends what it's made out of.  Sterling silver, gold plated, platinum, etc...

I got a pretty good beginners flute for marching band for $100, which is a reasonable price.  Closed hole, nickel plated (so therefore indestructible ^^).

Yamahas and Jupiters are very good brand, but it really depends on whether it is a beginners or intermediate flute, etc.  I had played on  Blessing flute once, and I really didn't like it, since it didn't easily give high notes.  If you are buying a flute that does have some gold plating on it, remember that it might not improve tone.  Some of that kind of plating is just for decoration.

Remember that you can buy good intermediate flutes from around $1000 to $2000.

Try looking at the price for the flute if it was brand new.  A good site is www.fluteworld.com

  5. I usually sell flutes for $150-175 in great condition needing no work and being in good cosmetic shape (with a case). For a flute in 'good' condition needing a cleaning (and possibly some adjustments and/or pads needing replacing), I'd sell them for around $100 or less.
