You will need to take one train from Sydney to Brisbane - then Brisbane to Cairns, take 'The Sunlander' or the 'Tilt Train'

not trying to put you off the train but personally, i think it would be a lot better to fly...

Flying is probobly cheaper and more comfortable. From what I have herd, the train between Sydney and Brisbane is pretty bad.

But from Brisbane to Cairns is OK. The Tilt Train is the one from Brisbane to Cairns and I have been on it and it is rather good.

It would take 2 and a half to 3 days to get to Cairns by train from Sydney.

If you really want to go by train then what I would reccomend is cutting your travel time by half and fly half the route.

So either fly from Sydney to Brisbane then keep going by train or go Sydney to Brisbane by train then Fly to Cairns....I would reccomend the Tilt Train from Brisbane to Cairns based on my experiance on the Tilt Train and the negitive comments on the SYD-BNE train.

so cut down half your travel time for PROBOBLY a similar price!
