  1. The prices are not the same all over Europe. The cheapest restaurant meals are usually in the places belonging to the immigrants in whichever country you are in: Greeks and Turks in Germany, Indonesians in Holland, North Africans in France etc.

Train tickets depend on the speed of your travel. If you take the superfast TGV or ICE which do over 300 km/h, it can cost you heaps unless you find a special offer like the 19 € specials offered sometimes by the German Railways.

What's the cost of a Macdonalds meal ? It costs us all the deforestation of South America.

  2. large McDonalds meal 5-7 EUR

train ticket: depends upon distance, 2 hours travel time are around 25 EUR one-way. http://www.bahn.de can give you the prices.

meal in a restaurant: 5-12 EUR in a chain like Nordsee, Wienerwald, PizzaHut or a Turkish fast-food style restaurant, between 10 and 40 EUR in a slightly better place. Drinks are expensive in restaurants, a small can of coke can go for 3 EUR. Avoid buying drinks and the price of dining out drops significantly.

If you are planning on backpacking through Germany, bring around 50 EUR per day and person. If you are on a really tight budget, you might be able to get by on 40 EUR per day and person, but only if your cost of transport is already covered.

Typical price for a hostel bed is between 15-25 EUR. Food can be as low as 5 EUR per day, but only if you buy it in supermarkets.
