  1. Because the optical cables are a proprietary design by Toshiba....they developed the Toslink cable and they're going to get paid for their design....

And of course, the design is the BEST for audio .....

  2. Digital coax is essentially just a plain old RCA cable, with some slightly higher resistance rating.

An optical cable is more difficult to manufacture, since it is a high quality plastic.

It really makes no difference which one you use, and frankly, a really cheap optical cable will work just as good as one of those ridiculously overpriced cables.

If you don't have a cheap source of cables nearby, you can always go on the internet.  I've bought from Monoprice.com and have had good experiences.  http://www.monoprice.com

  3. Toshiba also wants to earn money for what they have brought out.

Quality depends on a lot of factors and usually with good systems, you'll find digital co-axial cables better since the circuits to convert the signals to light and back are left out.

Sometimes the optical sounds better when the coaxial cables are prone to interference or if the system doesn't output the digital very well in the coaxial cable.
