  1. For experienced riders the average cost is close to 500$ dollars, but for beginners that price is much lower.  For startering out go and rent a board at a good surf shop where most of the time they will let you rent boards and then put the rental price towards the board that fits your need.  This will tell you what type of board you should get (longboard or fun shape most likely).  These can run high but beginner epoxy boards run closer to the 250-300$ mark and used boards are also an option and you can get a really good board at a great price.

Gear is basic wax, bathing suit and leash at minimum.  You can get rash gaurds, wetsuits, foot pads, fin upgrades, fiberglass repair kits and other things but all you need is the basic

  2. yea avg cost these days is probably $550. some local shops have them as low as $400 and big named places sell boards over $1000. You will need a leash, wax and maybe a wetsuit which can all be purchased at any surf shop

  3. If you are asking if surfing is pricey to get into I would say it depends upon your perspective.  You can expect to pay from $200-300 for a soft board and $500 and up for a hand shaped board.  So that is a little pricey but overall it is not an expensive sport.

If you look at things like snowboarding and golf you have to go buy your equipment and then have to pay to actually do the sport.  Waves are free.  Oh sure you can pay to travel to other surfing destinations but if you've got a local break and a board you are pretty well set.  The more you do it the more likely you are to invest in several boards but for a beginner a board, some wax and maybe a wet suit (depending on where you live) is all you need.  It might also be wise to attend a surf clinic in your area if there is one or at least have some friends show you the ropes.  Dig through the questions in here about learing to surf.  There have been tons of them.

  4. I saw one for about $500 in a surf shop in Hawaii recently but it was a shorter one.

If your a beginner, I suggest you invest on getting a "long board".

There are some other things you could get, but the store you purchase from probably has everything you need.

  5. BIC and NSP are excellent boards to start on as they float well and are pretty much unbrreakable.  These are also cheap compared to the custom made boards of ones that have been from fibreglass.

Depending on how big you are, for beginning, anyone under 9 stone I recommend a 7'3" board, over 10 and I recommend a 7'6" and over 13 stone then your talking 8ft or so.

For a surf though you will definatley need:

Wax (2-3 blocks to makesure you cover most of the board as you dont know where you'll be positioning yourself when you first go)

rash vest or wetsuit & rash vest - rash vest if its warm enough for board shorts, both if you need a wetsuit as a rash vest can also stop you getting a rash from your wetsuit!

also a leash - this will stop you having toswim back to shore to get your board once you've fallen off, and also stop your board flying into others!!
