  1. The primary is the first link attached from engine to next step.

Like on alot of bikes, they will say belt drive, shaft drive, chain drive, all part of the transmission, but the gear box attached to the rear of engine is the primary transmision.

You can say the box where the shifting takes place, is the PRIMARY TRANSMISION.

  2. Refers to the shaft not the trans just a mis-term

primary or main shaft also called the input shaft

  3. the primary sends the power from the motor to the tranny, i think

  4. the primary drive is often 1:1 but on some bikes it is slightly higher.... It is usually a gear or chain drive that connects the crankshaft to the transmission. They usually never go bad and never have to be repaired......

  5. Harleys are the perfect example of a primary drive.

Either a chain or belt connects the crank to the trani main shaft and clutch basket.

Though I suppose one could alter the ratio , I've never seen it done, It's so much easier to do at the final drive ( trani and rear wheel sprockets or pulleys)
