  1. Maternal Death (WHO definition): The death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and site of pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management but not from accidental or incidental causes.

(Basically, the death of a woman due to complications that arises due to pregnancy, but not due to any external causes, like accidents)

It is measured by: (total no. of female deaths due to complications of pregnancy, childbirth, or within 42 days of delivery from "puerperal causes" in an area during a given year)/total no. of live births in the same area and year X 1000

Maternal mortality is expressed as a rate per 1000 live births.

    Causes of Maternal Mortality:

    1. 80% is due to direct causes i.e., obstetric complications of pregnancy, labor, and puerperium (the post-delivery period), mainly obstetric haemorrhage, prolonged or obstructed labor, ectopic pregnancies, embolism

    2. Indirect causes: usually pre-existing diseases aggravated by the pregnancy or diseases developed during pregnancy. One of the main ones is anemia.

    3. Infections: Hepatitis, cardiovascular diseases, TB, malaria, and more increasingly HIV/AIDS

    4. Social Factors: Age of the woman (usually risk increases as the age increases beyond 30), Birth intervals (short birth intervals between two pregnancies), and Parity (Higher the number of pregnancies, higher the risk of mortality)

    5. Other Factors: Economic circumstances, Cultural practices, Nutritional status, Environmental conditions, and Violence against women

Maternal Morbidity: Any departure, subjective or objective, from a state of physiological or psychological well-being, during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period up to 42 days or 1 year.

Morbidity is very hard to measure as they tend to overlook a large number of conditions which are subclinical or inapparent.

Infant mortality: It is measured as the ratio of infant deaths (less than 1 year of age) registered in a given year to the total number of live births registered in the same year, usually expressed as a rate per 1000 live births

The leading causes of illness and death vary with each country. I am from India, so I can tell you the leading causes in my country.

It is better if you look it up in your country.

    Hope this helped.......
