  1. hard to say they started boxing 36 years apart jj in 1898 joe 1934 was the gloves the same how many rounds wos they willing to go? 15 u said. ive herd of them  28  ronuds he wos 1st and real jack dempsey in the 1800s and make todays fighter look like wwf  stars but one thing i no is if you  can fight you can fight and time does not come into it if your hard  in the 1600 it does not mean he is harder cos its 2008 the body has not changed or developed.  id say johnson wins cos he has more to gain and nothing to lose not like today with the comforts today .they had to fight look at our war heros world war 1 2 it hard then now its a buton.

  2. Johnson - W 93 (KO's 52) TF 127 - W pct 73% - KO pct 41% - wins over T. Hart and J. Jeffries - KO'ed by J. Williard (Johnson claims that he lost on purpose)

    Fought past 50yrs old (ridiculous)

    Louis - W 69 (KO's 55) TF 72 - W pct 96% - KO pct 72% - wins over Conn[2], Walcott, and Bradock - KO'ed by Schemling and Marciano - #1 ranked puncher - #4 ranked fighter

He initiated the bum of the month fights

The IRS should have given Joe a break with his tax problems.

As good as a defensive fighter that Johnson was he would be hard pressed not to get KO'ed by Louis. Louis by late rd KO or a unanimous decision.

  3. Joe Louis in a tough fight might have gone 15 rounds

  4. You can't really put to much weight on cross-era match ups because the game as a whole changes tremendously within the span of two to three decades.

Boxing was still more of a free-form brawl during Johnson's time and Johnson did so well because he was one of the first and best defensive practioners in his era.

By the time Joe came along, boxing had developed more of a science and defense began to take more precedent over the wild swinging offense of the early 20th century.

Guys like Gene Tunney introduced the art of defense and that influence exploded all over the roaring twenties as more fighters took place.

If I had to choose, I'd go with the more all around and complete fighter in Louis, but Johnson was no slouch. If he were brought up during the same day and age as Louis, I'd probably make him the favorite.

  5. Johnson was and still is the most overrated boxer of all time,a big time career bully who fought farmhands and barroom brawlers and an aged ex boilerman,Louis would KO Johnson quick, about 3 rounds much quicker than the ex circus strongman Willard did!!!

  6. Joe Louis was a complete fighter in his prime.  He had a great jab, good boxing ability, and dynamite in either fist.  Johnson was a great defensive fighter and a master counter puncher.  Both were pretty equal in size and in endurance. Louis would have eventually gotten to Johnson in the latter rounds and knocked him out after a good fight.  I pick Louis by 10th round technical knockout.

  7. Joe Louis would beat Johnson like a rented mule. It would take a few rounds for the ol' stalker to get through Johnson's defense and then set him up for one of his deadly combos in round 7- fight over.
