With the campaign almost half-way through, Bettor.com analyzes the best players in each position and compiles them into one star-studded team.
Formation: 4-3-3
Goalkeeper: Artur (Benfica)
Although not the biggest signing http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Artur-c6727 has definitely been the best goalkeeper in the Primeira Liga by some margin and was an excellent piece of business by the club.
Plucked from arch-rivals, Sporting Lisbon, the shot-stopper has gone to become a main-stay in the Reds’ line-up and has attracted rave reviews for his performances. After a superb half of the season, fans have nicknamed the 30-year-old, as Rei Artur (King
Artur).
His displays have not gone unnoticed in the rest of Europe and it is reported that the likes of AC Milan and Fulham are looking to acquire his services. However given his importance to the Lisbon giants, a move is highly unlikely to arise despite the lucrative
offers on the table.
Right-Back: http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Joao-Pereira-c18664 (Sporting Lisbon)
Sporting Lisbon did an awful lot of business during the summer and brought in a number of players, but nobody has had the same impact as Joao Pereira has had at Estadio Jose Alvalade.
The 27-year-old is now famous for his marauding runs up and down the flank and his current performances have also linked him with a switch to Paris Saint-Germain in the past few weeks.
A Portuguese International, Pereira has cemented his place in the National team as well and given how his career is shaping up, he could be plying his trade at one the biggest clubs in Europe after the summer.
Centre-Back: http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ezequiel-Garay-c13071 (Benfica)
After failing to cement his place at Real Madrid, the defender chose to pursue a new adventure in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Portugal-c2984 and the decision to ply his trade at the Stadium of Light has been one of the best he has ever made.
Partnering Luisao at the heart of the back-line, Garay has become an integral part of the side and features in nearly all the games. His solidarity has also been noteworthy as Benfica continue to dominate the Primeira Liga and are on course to securing the
title.
As the saying goes, “strikers win matches, defenders win championships”, that is something which is truly applicable to the Eagles’ defence, which has definitely been at its supreme best this term.
Centre-Back: Luisao (Benfica)
The Brazilian has continued where he left off last season and has been a rock in defence for the Portuguese giants. Although SC Braga’s Ewerton has closed the gap on the veteran in terms of quality, Luisao has been able to marshal his troops through his
superb reading of the game and his valuable experience.
An automatic choice when he is fit, the Selecao International was reported to be on the verge of signing for Paris Saint-Germain but luckily for Benfica, he made a drastic U-turn and chose to pen a new deal at the helm.
Luisao has already reiterated that he will end his career at the club and will continue playing as long as he is fit and is able to do so.
Left-Back: Alvaro Pereira (http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Porto-c39186)
Although Emiliano Insua has been a close competitor for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Álvaro-Pereira-c5297 as the best left-back in Portugal, the Uruguayan edges out the competition due to his pace and tendency to attack.
A pivotal figure in the Portistas line-up, Pereira has not been at his usual best this term but despite that can be considered as the top wingback in the country.
