Question:

Primer bulb of weed trimmer indication of bad start

After messing around with maintenance, changing spark plug and cleaning the carb on my weed trimmer the primer bulb does not come out and pushed in several times. Is this a heads up to why it wont start? It only runs a few seconds w/ starter fluid spray. Also, could this spray cause a gunk build-up if too much is added and remains there a while?

  1. One of two things.  Either the filter on the end of one of the fuel lines is plugged or the carburetor needs rebuilding.  The fuel filter is in the tank and you can fish it out with a piece of wire.  Remove it, replace the line in the tank and see if you can pump the bulb.  If you can put a new filter on it.  If it still won't pump, rebuild the carburetor.  Kits are available at most small engine repair shops for about $15.00 and is an easy job.

  2. The Primmer is sticking due to a stuck check valve in the primer plate of the carb, or a carb diaphram has been installed incorrectly. If you keep running it on starter fluid only it will damage the piston, rings and cylinder, that is if your trimmer is a 2 sroke.

  3. The primer bulb is probably the problem. they can be replaced. Then you can prime and not lose prime with a new soft bulb. usually four screws and a new bulb and you should be in business.
