A minute later, Gracián was booked for a yellow card when he was roughly tackled. Proceeding from that, Patricio Rodríguez assisted Silvera to score for Independiente in the 23rd minute. The score read 1-0 with Independiente in the lead.
Newell's Old Boys launched a counter attack from deep midfield in a bid to level the score. Cíchero fired a shot at goal but Independiente’s Navarro was too quick as he easily made the save.
After this attempt on goal, the tempo of the game came down a notch. Independiente made the next run as Rodríguez took a powerful shot to score but Peratta made the save in the 32nd minute.
Continuing from there, the game journeyed till the 42nd minute when Velázquez tried to score but his shot was too far off and wide. It was their last try to score in the first half.
The second half began with substitutions as Newell's Old Boys’ Velázquez was replaced by Salvatierra in the 46th minute. They also changed Raúl Villalba for Fideleff.
After the break, it was Newell's Old Boys that dominated the game on all fronts. Their players charged in front of the goal posts while the ball travelled on the flanks. Wingers looked eager to make plays and whenever the chance came, they grabbed the opportunity.
In the 55th minute, Borghello got a chance to equalize but failed as he struck the ball far from the post. Independiente responded but Old Boys defenders and midfielders were too sharp in marking the ball.
Due to this increased play in the midfield, the game slowed down.
In was only in the 65th minute when Newell's Old Boys’ Schiavi conceded a free kick but no one was able to capitalize. Attempts at scoring a goal increased considerably from here onwards.
Sperdutti made a shot but it was saved by Navarro in the 66th minute. Independiente counter attacked with Rodríguez making a run but it was a futile effort once more as Peratta pounced on the ball.
During the 70th minute, Independiente’s Patricio Rodríguez made another attempt at goal but his finishing ability was still too rusty as he ended up hitting the ball off target.
The 71st minute saw Newell's Old Boys bringing Luis Rodríguez on for Iván Borghello. Independiente were set to take advantage of the change before the new players settled down.
Independiente made a substitution in the 71st minute. They changed Patricio Rodríguez for Pacheco. An immediate change was observed as Independiente tried to outclass the Boys by dribbling the ball from the midfield in a bid to pass it to the flanks which was left open by defenders marking the mid.
This increased pressure resulted in Salvatierra making a foul on Tuzzio and a free kick was awarded. Gracián eventually got the chance to shoot after an orchestrated move but he fired it wide.
In the 76th minute, Mauro Fórmica levelled it for Newell's Old Boys as Mauricio Sperdutti assisted for the goal. Independiente, who had dominated the match, immediately went on the back foot as they improved their defence.
Playing safe but yet pragmatically, they made approaches to score a winner but Alayes was there to clear the ball from danger. On one such try, Alayes got the ball and a counter attack was being planned but Pacheco fouled him to bring things to a halt in the 81st minute.
