Prince Fielder, Nyjer Morgan help Milwaukee Brewers defeat New York Mets 7-6 – MLB Update
Prince Fielder smashed an amazing double in the eighth inning and Nyjer Morgan hit a homer in the ninth to help Milwaukee Brewers beat New York Mets 7-6 at Miller Park, Milwaukee on Wednesday, June 8.
"That eighth inning was tough," Fielder said. "But we've been playing hard all year, even when we're down. We knew if we went out there and at least tried to, not necessarily come back, but just try to do our job and have good at-bats and just do something."
After three scoreless innings were pitched, Nick Evans formally opened the account for the Mets in the fourth inning. Evans scored on a playable pitch of Randy Wolf, giving a 1-0 lead to the Mets. However, Fielder hit a two-run homer in the bottom of fourth
inning to give the Brewers a 2-1 lead.
The starting pitchers of both the Mets and Brewers, Mike Pelfrey and Randy Wolf, were extraordinarily tough to play as they pitched shut-out innings, keeping the fate of game open.
While the two maintained increasingly dominant and intimidating presence on the pitch, the eighth inning added a new flavour to the potentially interesting game. When Kameron Loe was tasked with pitching in the eighth inning, the New York Mets did the unexpected.
Carlos Beltran doubled to right to level the score and Angel Pagan singled to right to give a 3-2 lead to the Mets. As if that was not enough, Ronny Paulino struck an exciting three-run homer, giving an unlikely 6-2 lead to the Mets.
As the game suddenly took a turn in the Mets’ favour, the Brewers’ offence did not give up. They charged, as Ryan Braun scored a double to deep left centre and Fielder struck the second homer of the game to level the score as the two capitalised upon the
weak fastballs of Beato.
John Axford proved his ability to pitch a shut-out top ninth inning to keep the score level at 6-6. When Thayer came forward to pitch for the Mets, Nyjer Morgan doubled to right to win a tough 7-6 game for the Brewers.
The Mets’ manager was disappointed. "It's nothing new," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "Right now, there's an empty feeling because we thought we had that one pretty much wrapped up."
As the game went to the Brewers and the three-game series stays tied 1-1, Thursday’s encounter will surely be a tough battle.
