Prince Fielder's homer helps Milwaukee Brewers defeat New York Mets 11-9 – MLB Update
Prince Fielder, Ryan Braun and Yuniesky Betancourt had a homer each on Saturday, August 20 to help the Milwaukee Brewers beat the New York Mets 11-9 at Citi Field.
It was the 8th win for the Brewers in the last nine games they have played, and 21st in the last 24 games.
That was the reason why every Brewers player was enormously excited on Saturday. "When you're on a winning team, it makes you forget about yourself," Fielder said. "You're winning and your natural ability comes out and takes over."
Of the prime importance was the homer Prince Fielder hit that came in the ninth just when the Mets were dominating the game with 9-7 lead. With Fielder doing the extraordinary, he won the praises of his team manager.
"He hit that ball so hard, it didn't have a chance to hook," Brewers’ manager Ron Roenicke said. "We talk about solo home runs, they can win games late. But three-run home runs that are huge win games early."
A pall of disappointment descended on Jason Isringhausen who was subject to big hits in the ninth that sealed the fate of the game. "I usually figure it out," Isringhausen said. "But today, there was no figuring it out. I just couldn't find the strike zone."
Ryan Braun started it with a homer for the Milwaukee Brewers in the very first inning against Chris Capuano. Having 2-0 edge at the end of first, the Brewers Randy Wolf allowed a run to Jason Bay which made it 2-1 for the Mets.
Prince Fielder then had the biggest hit of the night in the third, a huge homer that took the lead to 5-1 for the Brewers. Once the lead was secured, both the starters threw solid innings, but the Brewers seemed unstoppable.
The sixth inning saw another homer by Yuniesky Betancourt that put the Brewers on the right track. Nonetheless, the game had all the flavours of excitement.
Ruben Tejada, Willie Harris, and David Wright had a single each in the seventh followed by a two-run double coming off Lucas Duda’s bat that made it 7-6 for the New York Mets as Randy Wolf struggled to contain the Mets’ hitters.
Trailing behind, the Mets upped the ante in the eighth with Josh Thole’s single and Angel Pagan’s homer – making the Mets a dominant side for the first time in the game with 9-7 lead.
But little did Isringhausen figure out what was coming his way. Mark Kotsay had a single first followed by Prince Fielder and Casey McGehee’s singles to the right that brought Brewers back in the game with a 11-9 lead.
It was here that John Axford pitched a shut-out ninth to win the Brewers a fascinating 11-9 victory, winning the second consecutive encounter of the three-game series.
