Prince Fielder and Detroit Tigers agree to a $214 million deal – MLB News
According to a leading sports website, Prince Fielder has agreed to a 9-year $214 million deal with Detroit Tigers. Earlier this month, the left handed striker had complaint that he was struggling to find a long termer in the market. Signing on a nine-year contract with his favourite club, Fielder will be very pleased with the whole situation now.
In his childhood, Fielder always wanted to be a part of Detroit Tigers as he believed he could build a successful career with the club. According to sources, Tigers’ General Manager Dave Dombrowski also wanted to sign on Fielder a while ago. However, due to lack of appropriate position, he had to wait until 2012.
The Tigers haven’t confirmed the Fielder deal as yet. According to Fielder’s agents, the Tigers are waiting for a physical before making an announcement. Fielder displayed some high quality hitting skills last season to let Milwaukee Brewers achieve reasonable results. Hitting .299 batting average with 120 RBI’s and 38 home runs, he looked in commanding form last season. He was also voted third for the National League Most Valuable Players award.
“Everyone knew Mr. Ilitch and Mr. Dombrowski were going to make a move when Victor went down,” outfielder Brennan Boesch said in a phone interview with the Associated Press. “But I don’t think anybody thought it would be this big.”
“I don’t think there’s a better right-left combo (than Fielder and Cabrera) in any lineup in baseball. I’m sure Skip’s wheels are already turning on how to set them up,” hall of famer Al Kaline said.
Tigers’ have made this move after their designated Hitter Victor Martinez suffered a serious knee injury. The DH is expected to miss the entire 2012 season due to an ACL tear. Martinez’s absence from the batting line-up provides Fielder with an excellent opportunity to bat higher up the order.
Earning almost $23.8 million per year, Fielder is the most expensive player in Majors League Baseball right now. He will be looking to make the most of available opportunities to cement his place in the team. The Tigers, on the other hand, will be hoping for a decent return on their huge investment.
