Prince Fielder and Justin Verlander shine as Detroit Tigers prevail 3-2 – MLB Regular season
Tigers’ Manager Jim Leyland will be very pleased with the way his team responded to difficult situations in a thrilling game against Boston Red Sox at the Comerica Park Detroit, Michigan.
Without a shadow of a doubt, Detroit Tigers are the favourites to make it to the World Series finals this season. Not showing any signs of nerves, the Tigers prevailed in a nail biting encounter on April 5 to win the first game of the regular season.
However, Tigers’ success over the last few seasons has been largely down to players’ incredible and consistent performances. Tigers’ ace Justin Verlander helped his team win the American League Central Division title in an emphatic fashion in 2011. His 24
wins, 250 strikeouts and impressive 2.40 ERA won him the American League Most Valuable Player Award past season.
Verlander again played a key role in Tigers 3-2 win over the Red Sox on Thursday Afternoon. Last year’s Cy Young winner displayed some high quality hitting skills over eight innings pitched.
Not allowing a run, he provided the Tigers with a 2-0 lead at the end of eighth inning. However, the Red Sox fought back superbly, tying the score in the ninth inning, thanks to Jose Valverde’s first blown save since 2010.
"There was a lot I saw that I liked. Lester was terrific. He did just what he needed to do," Red Sox Manager Bobby Valentine said in a post game interview. "Verlander was very good. A lot of pitches on the outside corner were perfect pitches."
"This was the best Opening Day I've had, and hopefully that goes toward all the hard work I've been putting in to get off to a better start," Verlander said. "Long way to go, but it's good to get that first one under your belt and have it be a good one."
Fielder, who is the fourth highest paid athlete in MLB history, also had a great time on the mound as he drove in a key run. The left handed striker was the most dominant force in MLB last season. The Tigers will be expecting him to get the job done.
