Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera win Silver Slugger Award – MLB Detroit Tigers News
Detroit Tigers’ third baseman Miguel Cabrera is hoping to grab the American League Most Valuable Player Award, which will be decided next week. However, for now, he can share an award with his team-mate and first baseman Prince Fielder.
Both Tigers’ hitters earned a Silver Slugger Award for 2012 season. Fielder and third baseman Cabrera produced a number of match winning performances last season. Both players are strong offensively as well as defensively.
Cabrera, in particular, displayed some top quality hitting skills after the All Star Break. It is the fourth time Cabrera has won this Award, winning it in 2005 and 2006 with the Florida Marlins and in 2012 with the Detroit Tigers.
The hard hitting Cabrera fell short to Boston Red Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez in last year’s voting. Tigers’ third baseman, who played a big part in his team’s American League Central Division title winning campaign, became the first hitter to win
the Triple Crown Award since 1967. He hit .330 with 44 home-runs and 139 RBI’s.
Prince Fielder, on the other hand, won the Silver Slugger Award for the third time in his career and first in the American League. Fielder also had a decent time on the plate in the last season as he hit .314 with 30 home-runs and 198 RBIs.
He also won the Home Run Derby title for the second time in four years. Fielder’s previous Silver Slugger wins came in 2007 and 2011 with the Milwaukee Brewers. Kansas’ City Royals’ designated hitter Billy Butler, New York Yankees’ second baseman Robinson
Cano, Yankees’ shortstop Derek Jeter, Chicago White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski, Texas Rangers’ Josh Hamilton, Los Angeles Angels’ Mike Trout and Minnesota Twins’ outfielder Josh Willingham are the other American League Silver Slugger winners.
Players who won a Silver Slugger Award from the National League this season are:
Catcher Buster Posey (San Francisco Giants)
Shortstop Ian Desmond (Washington Nationals)
Second baseman Aaron Hill (Arizona Diamondbacks)
Pitcher Stephen Strasburg (Washington Nationals)
Outfielders Ryan Braun (Milwaukee Brewers)
Andrew McCutchen (Pittsburgh Pirates)
Jay Bruce (Cincinnati Reds)
Third baseman Chase Headley (San Diego Padres)
First baseman Adam LaRoche (Washington Nationals)
