Prince Fielder apparently not on priority list of the Chicago Cubs – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs are reported to have no bigger offer to make to free-agent slugger, Prince Fielder, according to reports on Thursday, December 22, 2011. There were reports previously that Dale Sveum would personally like to have some talks with the player
if the club and the player would go ahead.
Although the club is said to have enough finance to get the player into the team, what stops the Chicago Cubs from it is the part of a calculated plan, whereby the newly hired front-office staff would like to build up a team which does not heavily rely on
the big names.
Even if a winner team and combination is to be formed, it is through the amalgamation of young and experienced players. What is clear right now is that the club would desist from investing too many finances on experienced players. It is the reason why there
have barely been big transactions in the recent months.
What the club is instead doing is to look for young prospects. While this strategy may well be practical for the Cubs, observers looking at this development with their lenses have an altogether different view.
“If you are completely honest about the current roster that Theo and Jed inherited I don’t see more than a handful of pieces that a championship type team would want to have on their roster. Garza, Castro, Marshall, perhaps Marmol if they can get his wildness
under control, and maybe another bullpen piece or two and that’s about it,” said an observer.
It was through patience and perseverance, and with the exceeding ambition of a young professional, that Theo Epstein – the current president of baseball operations for the Cubs, had once built the Boston Red Sox. His insight into the game, the fortitude
and devotion in that young age brought glory to the Red Sox.
Now that the Cubs do not intend to go for heavy spending, seemingly unwilling to get a contract with Prince Fielder, it remains to be seen what the next strategy will be. Whatever it is, in the end, the Cubs would definitely want a resilient combination.
