Prince Fielder could give Detroit Tigers third straight MVP Award – MLB Update
Prince Fielder is a naturally gifted hitter. Since making his Major League Baseball debut, the guy has produced magical performances, making him one of the most expensive players in history of the game.
In 2011, Fielder hit behind Ryan Braun, who went on to win the National League Most Valuable Player Award. Tigers’ first baseman then played an extremely important supporting role in Miguel Cabrera’s MVP and Triple Crown Award winning season in 2012.
The left hander, who signed on a $214 million nine year contract with the Tigers last year, hit .313 with 30 home-runs and 108 RBI’s. His ability to hit home-runs against the righty pitchers gave Cabrera an excellent chance to be productive against the southpaws.
Cabrera, Tigers won their second straight American League MVP.
It has been nearly a half century since players from any Major League Baseball team has won three straight MVP’s. New York Yankees did it in 1961-1963, thanks to Roger Maris, Mickey Mantle and Elston Howard who took the hardware home three years in a row.
For the Tigers, ace Justin Verlander had his career best season in 2011. Leading the American League in wins, ERA and strike-outs, he went to win the pitching Triple Crown Award and MVP Award.
Then, it was Cabrera’s turn to claim the prestigious trophy. The 29-year-old hit .330 with 44 home-runs and 139 RBI’s, beating out Los Angeles Angels’ rookie Mike Trout to win the MVP.
With Cabrera in tremendous form, pitchers in the American League are expected to take their chances against Fielder, which could give him an opportunity to improve his numbers.
The signing of outfielder Torii Hunter and return of injured Victor Martinez is expected to strengthen up the Tigers’ batting line-up. With some of the best hitters in the line-up, there will be absolutely no pressure on Fielder in the next season.
However, it will be important for him to start the season on a positive note. If Fielder can gain some confidence in first half of the season, surely he will be the favourite to win the Most Valuable Player Award in the next season.
