Prince Fielder helped turn the Milwaukee Brewers around: Doug Melvin – MLB News
Hours after the Detroit Tigers signed Prince Fielder to a nine-year contract, the Milwaukee Brewers’ general manager Doug Melvin stated that Fielder was a key player while the team was rebuilding. Prince Fielder was one of the almost inalienable parts of
the team over the years.
Fielder, who signed a $214 million deal with the Detroit Tigers, was drafted in the Brewers prior to the arrival of Doug Melvin himself. All the same, Ryan Braun also had his inclusion in the Brewers later; emerging as almost an invincible duo to bring remarkable
victories to the team.
This is what Doug Melvin acknowledged, expressing his pride in giving the opportunity to the player to grow professionally.
"My approach with Prince is that he helped turn this organization around," Melvin said. "He took us from a level where we were rebuilding, and he was 'the guy.' He was here even before Ryan [Braun] was. Prince, I feel proud of the opportunity we were able
to give him here, and he capitalized on it.”
Interestingly, there is a growing buzz on the future contract of the player as there was a partial hesitance in almost all the teams to go for a big deal with Prince Fielder. He was taking his cue from Albert Pujols who had recently been signed by the Los
Angeles Angels for over $250 million.
With Texas Rangers shilly-shallying, the slow progress with the Chicago Cubs, the arrival in to the Detroit Tigers seems quite a surprise for many observers. Nonetheless, Doug Melvin stated that he was glad to know that Fielder got a deal that he is satisfied
with.
"In some sense, I'm glad he got a good contract that he's satisfied with. We knew early on that we probably weren't going to be in it. I think Prince probably knew that, too."
Milwaukee Brewers may apparently have lost a great slugger from their team. However, there is a sense of confidence within the team that the players will exert themselves to compensate that loss somehow. It will be interesting to see how the Brewers go about
it with the irreplaceable Prince Fielder already gone.
