Prince Fielder lands at the place where he always wanted to be – MLB News
According to sources, former Milwaukee Brewers' first baseman Prince Fielder has signed on a nine-year $214 million contract with Detroit Tigers. Fielder was absolutely sensational last season as he dominated the pitchers with his high class hitting skills.
Batting with a decent .299 average with 120 RBI’s and 38 home runs, he looked on top of his game play past season. Following his consistent performances in 2011, he was voted third for the National League Most Valuable Players award.
“I don’t think there’s a better right-left combo (than Fielder and Cabrera) in any lineup in baseball. I’m sure Skip’s wheels are already turning on how to set them up,” outfielder Brennan Boesch said in a phone interview with the Associated Press.
The Tigers have made this move after their designated hitter, Victor Martinez, went out of the side due to an ACL tear. Martinez was taking part in a routine training session when he picked up a knee injury and he is expected not to comeback until the end of 2012 season. Batting at number five slot, Martinez made the most of available opportunities last season. His absence will let Fielder have the leverage to bat behind Miguel Cabrera.
The two could form a dangerous hitting pair in Major League Baseball and the Tigers will have high expectations from the duo. Fielder also wanted to be part of Detroit Tigers as he is convinced that he can build a hall of famer career with the club. Although Fielder has a poor defensive technique, his ability to hit home runs makes him one of the most wanted players in the big league right now.
In an interview, Tigers’ General Manager, Dave Dombrowski expressed his delight at signing Fielder. After making a huge investment on one of the best players in the league, he will be hoping to sit back and watch the Tigers win the World Series title.
Fielder, on the other hand, will be looking to help the Tigers achieve their desired. If can maintain his form, he will have another chance of winning the National league Most Valuable Player award.
