Prince Fielder still has a room for improvement, Alan Trammel – MLB Detroit Tigers News
Alan Trammel, Cecil Fielder’s team-mate is convinced that Prince Fielder still has room for improvement in his game play. Fielder, who signed a nine year $214 million contract with the Tigers last week, produced phenomenal performances last season. His batting average of .299 with 38 home-runs and 120 RBI’s suggests that he was in commanding form in 2011.
However, Trammel believes that Fielder’s swing is not as good as his father’s. Cecil used to swing his bat with more delay, which allowed him to watch the ball more closely. Not only he was strongly built, Cecil was very agile and quick on the plate. His excellent footwork helped him play his natural game with freedom even against the flame throwing pitchers.
Although Fielder possesses a very powerful swing, his movement of the feet is quite slow. With his simple swing, he can clear the right field quite comfortably. However, his ability to hit home-runs in either direction of the ballpark still remains a question.
Cecil is very excited these days about his son receiving the fourth largest contract in Major League Baseball history. In an interview with a leading sports website, the former Tigers’ hitter stated that he trained Fielder when he was a kid.
"Hey, outfielders play this kid straight away," Trammell said. "He hits a lot high in the air and the opposite way. This guy can hit! No!" he said with a smile.
"Hey, my youngest son, Grant, is 7 years old," Cecil Fielder said. "He's going to be the best athlete of them all. ...This kid is the next superstar, a switch-hitter."
"'Nah, you didn't,'" Fielder quoted. "'My brother plays. But, Dad, you didn't play.' I'm going to take this award and show my son I played baseball."
Fielder, who struggled to run to first base as a kid, received coaching from his father from an early age. Cecil transformed his body according to the needs of the game. He will be looking to make the most of available opportunities in 2012 to help the Tigers win the World Series title.
