  1. Prince Philip could be titled as "King Consort" if Queen Elizabeth II wanted to, however it is still only a courtesy title. King consort is a title given in some monarchies to the husband of a queen regnant. Nowadays, it is a symbolic title only, the sole constitutional function of the holder being similar to a queen consort, namely to produce an heir to the throne. Spain, Portugal, England and Scotland have all had kings consort; however, since the rank of king normally outranks that of queen, in most monarchies the queen's husband is given the title of prince or prince consort instead.

When Prince Philip first married to then “The Princess Elizabeth”, he was only styled as “His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh.” It was only until 1957 when Philip was finally styled as "His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh". The Queen has never granted the Prince Philip the title of Prince Consort and it was speculated that she would on their 60th anniversary.

  2. Because if he were king, he would be over Queen Elizabeth who has the right to be on the throne.

  3. The royal who is a blood descendent from the previous monarch is the one who has a 'divine' right to rule the country.

In this case, it was the Queen who actually had the right to rule the country.  In such a case as this, her husband could not be given the title 'king' as this would make it appear that he had the right to rule.  Being married to the reigning monarch does not give you the right to rule a country, hence he could not be a King.  As a result, the title 'Prince' is given in this case.

The title Queen, however, is given to the wife of a King on the basis that Queens do not usually rule, unless there isn't a King.

  4. The title King is regarded as Higher in rank than Queen!

Elizabeth was the Daughter and Heir of the previous King (George 6th)  So it's her throne and Philip has to have a title that denotes his lower rank.

Any man who marries the Queen of a Country takes the title 'Prince Consort' whereas a woman takes the Title of Queen

  5. Several reasons

1.) He is not British born citizen

2.) He is from Greek-German decent

3.) Cause it's the Queen of England that is reigning.

  6. Because, then he would have higher rank then her, and then he'd be the monarch. A king's wife is queen, because she would still be ranked lower than he is, so he would still be monarch.

  7. His Royal Highness,Prince Philip,Duke of Edinburgh was not heir to the throne;his wife, Elizabeth II was heir to her father,King George VI. She is Queen Regent;since there is a Queen as monarch,no one else can wear a title higher than hers and "king" presumes the monarch. But this won't do because the monarch is The Queen,so Philip is Prince Consort.

Prince Philip is of Royal blood himself(Danish-German and prince of Greece) and a third cousin of his wife, the Queen, but was not heir to the UK throne. Spouses of Queen monarch are Prince-Consorts,while spouses of Kings are Queen-Consorts;these spouses do not automatically receive powers to rule, they are just spouses unless something happens that requires that they carry out state powers. Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, and both her daughters and son-in-law were granted such powers during King George VI's operation and recuperation from lung cancer surgery.

  8. A queen's husband is never king.  However, I feel that Philip should at some point have been created such, all that he's done to modernize the monarchy over the years.  Hard to believe it's been 60!!

  9. bcoz she became queen as her father was a king...its down her bloodline not his....he married a royal princess and she was in line to the throne...

its like Guy Ritchie he is Mr Madonna coz she is the diva with the success...lol...

  10. If he were king he would take precedence over our queen.  Hi is therefore a "consort"  Our queen is a "queen regnant" or reigning queen.  It is HER throne and she is not taking second place to anyone!

  11. Because he wasn`t heir to the throne so can only assume the title he has. However the wife of a king would be a Queen regardless......

  12. Philip holds the title of Prince, from his connection to the Greek royal house .. therefore cannot have a second royal title under either country's constitution .. technically speaking, he is NOT a British citizen .. hence his title Duke, the highest position he can attain under present rules of precedence

  13. Because he married into the royal family. He wasn't the one in line for the throne.

  14. because he isnt the bloodline, the queen is
