  1. Hear hear, Carl C.

  2. The first name "William" was used as a royal name in Great Britain for nearly one thousand years starting with William the Conqueror. However, the use of "William" had seen a steady decline until 1982 when Prince Charles and Princess Diana named their first son William. Prince William's full name is "William Arthur Philip Louis", he was partially named after his father Prince Charles, whose full name is "Charles Philip Arthur George."

Prince William of Wales is a member of the British royal family. The current British monarch is his paternal grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. He is the future heir to the British throne, and is currently second in line to the British throne after his father, The Prince Charles, Prince of Wales.

  3. Since Carl C erroneously did not answer the asker's question, I shall. It is true William was a fading name among the royals until William's birth.

William I of England (William the Conqueor)

William II of England, the 3rd son of William I

William III of England and Ireland (William II, King of Scotland), born into the House of Orange-Nassau

William IV of the UK, king of Hanover and son of George III

I am sure there are other royals in Europe he is named after.

I think it was about time someone put the name George to rest.

  4. It is incorrect to refer to Prince William's mother as Princess Diana.  She was not a princess of the blood royal.  Before her divorce her correct title was Her Royal Highness, Diana, Princess of Wales.

A few days before the decree absolute of her divorce, Letters Patent were issued by Queen Elizabeth containing general rules to regulate the titles of people who married into the Royal Family after divorce.

In accordance with those rules, as she was no longer married to the Prince of Wales, and so had ceased to be a Royal by-marriage, Diana lost the style, Her Royal Highness and instead was styled, Diana, Princess of Wales.
