  1. I disagree. Prince Andrew flew helicopters in the Fawklands war. Prince Harry wanted to go to the middle east but due to threats to his and the other soldiers' lives, he had to withdraw. I think the reason the royal family go into the armed forces is because ordinary men and women are fighting a battle for THEM and THEIR country, and because THEY decide to have a war. It's their way of showing utter belief in the cause that they are sending other men and women to fight for.

  2. Apparently its so that when he eventually becomes King he will also be the effective leader of the Armed forces so has to have a working knowledge of what they do. Though i think its a total waste of taxpayers money.

  3. When HRH Princes William and Harry joined the British Army, it was their intention to serve the nation in whatever capacity the Army High Command should decide.

It is not their fault that they have not been allowed to join their regiments out there in Iraq.

The Royal Family have always served our nation in the armed forces.

You must remember that William will one day be King and when he is King he will also be Grand Admiral of the Fleet.

    GOD SAVE THE QUEEN

  4. Prince Andrew was of course in the Falklands, but he's never been direct heir to the throne anyway.  Maybe they thought he was more expendable!  I think other (lesser) royals have also done active duty.

Prince William, it's like Teddy said. When he's king he's supposed to have a proper understanding of how all aspects of the military work.  And it's supposed to be good experience for them, backbone building and all that.

  5. I just feel bad that they had to shorten the flying course for William.  The best thing for him would be to do the ENTIRE course, not just some mickey mouse watered down version.  "Oh were just teaching him how to fly quickly, we really don't expect him to be operational."  Oh goody, RAF, and could you make sure he doesn't fly over any populated areas of Britain......

  6. do you remember the falklands war where prince andrew saved hundreds of lives flying his helicopter low level over the sea being fired at to save our guys, prince harry also wanted to go to iraq but it was the army itself that wouldnt let him go, as for prince william, l think he will one day make a good king as he has his mothers conpassionate nature.

  7. I thought it was based on tradition and duty frankly.  Keep in mind both princes wanted to go and fight but were stopped.  Beside there has always been a british royal family member in either of the armed forces.

  8. They were very keen for Harry to go into Iraq (for good publicity is my guess) however, his life is obviously more sacred than any civilians or soldiers currently there. Yes, he'd probably be a target, but I still don't know why he gets special treatment- he's still human.

  9. At least he's doing something and learning something new. I'm not a big fan of the Royal family but I think it's good that they get an idea of what some of their country do for a living. It's not like he could get a job in civi street!

  10. tradition,tradition,tradition....it is tradition for the king, and princes to have military training...

  11. It's not true that royals don't get sent to trouble zones:

Prince Andrew flew helicopters in the Falklands war,

The future King George VI was in the navy at the Battle of Jutland, and his brother the Duke of Kent was killed in a flying boat crash in 1942.

It was the army's decision not to send Harry to Iraq.

  12. Prince Andrew went to the Falklands.

  13. it looks really good for a future monarch to be defending the country like other people.   it makes them look equal, responsible, just like one of the people.
