  1. Although he is second in line to the British Throne, his father and grandmother are much higher in rank than he is, and the lower ranks must salute those higher than them (whilst in uniform)....regardless of who they are...and quite honestly, you don't get a much higher rank in this country than being the King or Queen.

Prince WIlliam, and all those who laid wreaths saluted out of respect for those brave men and women who gave their lives in combat.

  2. He salutes his dad and grandmother as they are higher rank then him, he also salutes those above him in rank. In uniform he should also salute the Duke of York and Princess Royal (if they are also in uniform).

Also when he was at Sandhurst he addressed his trainers as "Sir" but due to his status as direct heir to throne they also addressed him as "Sir".

  3. He is following military protocol. When he laid the wreath,he was honoring war dead.William would salute all military officials and they would salute back. The Queen,Prince Philip,Prince Charles and Prince Andrew are higher ranked than William. The Queen,as monarch,is head of all the military branches.Philip and Andrew are war veterans, and Charles is a veteran of 20-years worth of service. The Prince of Wales last assignment was a Commander of the HMS Bronington, a mine-sweeper;he was also a Marine and Helicopter pilot. Charles served in all branches of the military because one day he will be Commander-and Chief of all of them.Anne,The Princess Royal holds a number of appointments in the British and Commonwealth Armed Services:

8th Canadian Hussars (Princess Louise's) (Colonel In Chief)

The Blues and Royals (Royal Horse Guards and 1st Dragoons) (Colonel)

Canadian Forces Communications and Electronics Branch (Colonel In Chief)

    Canadian Forces Medical Branch (Colonel-In-Chief)

First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (Princess Royal's Volunteer Corps) (Commandant In Chief)

The Grey and Simcoe Foresters (Colonel In Chief)

    HMS Albion (Sponsor)

    HMS Talent (Sponsor)

    Portsmouth (Commodore-in-Chief)

The King's Royal Hussars (Colonel In Chief)

The Queen's Gurkha Signals and The Gurkha Transport Regiment (Affiliated Colonel-In-Chief)

Royal Air Force Lyneham (Honorary Air Commodore)

The Royal Army Veterinary Corps (Colonel-In-Chief)

Royal Australian Corps of Signals (Colonel In Chief)

Royal Corps of Signals (Colonel In Chief)

The Royal Logistic Corps (Colonel In Chief)

Royal New Zealand Corps of Signals (Colonel In Chief)

Royal New Zealand Nursing Corps (Colonel In Chief)

The Royal Newfoundland Regiment (Colonel In Chief)

The Royal Regina Rifles (Colonel In Chief)

The Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (Royal Colonel)

Women in the Royal Navy (Chief Commandant)

The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment (29th/45th Foot) (Colonel In Chief until merging into the Mercian Regiment in August 2007)

When a soldier,sailor,marine,airforceman/woman salutes another service person,he or she is simply following military protocol(a form of etiquette) that shows recognition to another service person.William would salute fellow service people, family members who served included, and they would salute him.

  4. No matter who you are in the forces you salute the uniform not whose in it

  5. It has to do with military rank and respect, and it has nothing to do with where he stands in the line or royal succession.

    Tradition, tradition, tradition.

  6. Because the rule is you have to salute people of higher rank.
