i have bought a new printer; a HP laserjet 2600N. I have it connected to a network which means all my pcs can print - which is what i want. However, i want to make sure that not just anyone can go on and start printing - is there a way to restrict printing - ie through the use of passwords

  1. Hi,

People can't just go on and print as if its a network printer like you say then you need specific software in order to use it and unless your neignbours know exactly what make and model your printer is then they can't get hold of the drivers. So you are safe.

  2. If you don't have the printer made available through a server, the best thing I can think to do is only make the printer available to certain user groups then just add each user you want to be able to print on the 2600N to that group.

I'm on my MAC just now so I can't me specific about menus, but assuming your running windows XP, go to control panel and I think 1 of the third options in classic view Administrative Tools would be a good place to start.

    Ross.

  3. You can not secure any standard network printer as such. If this is a more advanced model, there may be a security section when you log into it through the web browser. This normally allows setting allowed users. Any other and the only way to control it is to not install the drivers on a machine which you do not want to print to it.

  4. Yes, Depending on the router. You can lock the port down so that only certain MAC address' can use it. But it would be better if you connected it through a PC so that you can take full control of its security options.
