  1. Lasers have sharper text and are generally faster than inkjets. While toner cartridges are more expensive than ink, they print more pages, so the cost per page is lower. But you pay more up front. Inkjets are better for photos and cheaper for low volume. Personally, I use both. I have an inkjet for photos, a color laser for high volume color jobs and a black laser for regular text. I use the black laser most often.

You can get a good color laser today for under $170 (Samsung CLP-315). Toner cartridges are more expensive then inkjet cartridges but they last for about 2,000 pages. It does a nice job on photos, but an inkjet is still better for this.

Inkjet: As someone who was in the computer hardware business for years (though I rarely sold printers since I couldn't compete with the crazy rebates) I have always recommended Epson. The print quality is excellent, even on plain paper. I have photos I printed on a 640 about ten years ago hanging in my office which still look good, though not as good as the ones from the CX8400 on glossy paper. The warranty is excellent. For a year, Epson will express-ship a replacement and pick up the old one. I had one customer who needed this. He called one afternoon and had the replacement two days later. Another client bought a Canon. It needed two repairs within a few months. Each time it was taken to the repair center, then picked up a few days later. This client runs a specialty printing business and this really hurt. They have since bought an Epson CX5000 and have had no down time since.

All name brand ink is expensive, but you can get cheap new replacement cartridges for Epson (not refills which I never recommend) for under $5 at http://ccs-digital.com/ink.asp   I have been using these for years.

The CX8400 scanner/copier/printer was on sale at circuitcity.com for $60 with free shipping. It uses 3 colors plus black.

The NX400 which uses the same cartridges is on sale at Staples for $75.

The RX595 scanner/copier/printer also prints on DVDs. It uses 5 colors plus black and has even higher photo quality. It's on sale for $80 after $55 instant rebate.

If all you want to do is print text, then get a black laser printer which you can find for $50.

  2. Thermal printers is best choice  for labels printing .....

    Zebra 105SL  (203dpi)

    Z4M

    monarch 9850(203 or 300 dpi)

    Avery  Dennison

  3. You can use a thermal printer, but I do not see a reason for paying the additional price. The Epson C120 or CX7400 (print, copy, scan), both retail for $69.99. They both use 4 individual ink cartridges and use pigment ink rather than dye ink. The pigment ink is waterproof on plain paper and lasts up to 4 times longer than dye. If you want to print on the white labels, this printer is perfect. If you want to print on transparent labels, this is not the printer for you. With the transparent medias, the pigment ink does not adhere to the slick surface. I print labels on photo gloss, print & stick paper (Office Depot). You can print on whatever type you want, ie. mailing labels, re-positionable paper etc.

If you are printing labels for items you are selling, then I would definitely go with the re-positionable papers, so people are not getting stuck on tags. These are easily removable and can be used over and over.

  4. You also need a proper program for printing labels.

Open - "Microsoft Picture It! Premium 10"

    Open proper file.

    Click - FILE,

    Click - Print

Click "print multiple pictures or on special paper"

Click "Select a layout" put dot on "Category"

    Select - "Business Cards"

    Select - "Landscape"

    hit "next"

    --- or ---

    Select - "Portrait"

    Select - "5371-Business Cards"

--- or whatever size lable you have ---

    hit "next"

Select 6 - "Scale to fit"

Drag Thumb-nail image to Blank area on screen

Select 5 - "Fill with selected picture"

    hit "next"

Follow further instructions on the program.

  5. You'll have to describe the WHOLE SITUATION, or hire a consultant, since we're simply NOT GETTING THE WHOLE PICTURE.

A thermal printer is good if you need special size sticker / labels that comes on ROLLS or fanfolds, not sheets, and/or you need them to print ONE at a time, such as at a shipping station, and each label would say different things. Thermal printers are also pretty fast... They measure output in "inches per second", and processing is almost instantaneous, with no fusor heat-up delays like laser or wait for the page to finish like the inkjets. However, Thermal printers, like Zebra, cost a LOT of money, when compared to the regular inkjets and/or lasers.

Regular laser / inkjets are much more common and easily available, but they print ONE SHEET at a time, even if you need just one label. And they need sheet paper, and their paper path may not permit thick media from going through cleanly. And the sticker may cause problems in the laser's fusor due to the heat acting on the glue. A lot of printers now have "special feed slots", but the problem can still exist.

So, only you would know if it's right for you. Hire a consultant, who may know more products than you for your specific situation. But you have to decide for yourself.
