Question:

Prior-Service AF (F-16 Acft Armament) to USAF Security Forces?

Greetings! I spent a 6-year enlistment in the active duty Air Force as a mechanic. I originally enlisted for Security Forces, but was unable to get a clearance back then. I have a current Secret clearance, and a re-entry/re-enlistment code of 1J (Eligible for re-enlistment, but elects to separate).

I am currently serving in the Air Force Reserve as F-16 weapons. What would the transition be like? What are the odds of getting in as SF? It's my dream job and I want it, I think after 6 years--I've earned that right.

I called a local recruiter last week who said all they had left was EOD and Pararescue slots (and I can't swim, so pararescue is a terrible idea)--and she said that a new list is coming sometime in October.

Does anyone know when in October this list would come out? What percentage of a chance would there be in having Security Forces on that list?

What would I need to do? What kind of documentation? I would like to hurry up the process (I have a really cool commander who's understanding about careers/meeting one's personal goals)--what is the shortest and longest amount of time it would take? I still have all of my medical records and DD-214, all training certificates in 2W171, and all award certificates.

Thank you in advance for all of your help!!!

  1. On Oct 1st, the new budget year starts.

The AF does not let many prior service enlist again, even from the guard or reserves.

In 2007, they allowed just 29 prior service to enlist.

But, SF is having a hard time getting and keeping people right now, due to constant deployments.

So after oct 1st, go back and talk to the recruiter.

It would be considered a reenlistment, not an enlistment.

So if SF has a reenlistment bonus, you would get it, after you finished your Tech School.

Since your currently Reserves, don't worry about documentation.

Your all set, they will just get your dd-214 and your reserve records.

If you cannot get back in as SF, you might wanna look at EOD.

  2. I got out of the AF in 2006...at that point, SF was ALWAYS looking for people.  I would go talk to another recruiter.  The AF normally does not get willing participants to go to SF.  Just an idea.  Good luck!
