I left the National Guard as an E-3 and wanna know if I can join the navy reserves and get an A-school. I wanna switch my job I am a 21W which is equivalent to a BU, but I want a completely different job. I know a little bit a bout the Navy because I trained with the CB's, but just don't know all the details on enlistment and such please any help would be appreciated unless its hateful and not productive thanks

  1. Generally, if you left the National Guard Honorably with no medical conditions or personnel issues, etc... you should have little problem with getting into the Navy Reserves.  Each rating fluctuates based on the current needs of the Navy Reserves.  If you are interested in the Seabees you will have greater chance of getting one of their ratings as then Navy Reserve has a greater need for them given the current military situation.  Most OSVETs and NAVETs (Other/Navy Service Veterans) applicants do not get the opportunity to go to an A School because when you join you immediately affiliate with your parent reserve center and then they would have to pay for your training, normally they will only send you to a school only if you are being Mobilized or if their command has a requirement to have so many people on hand with certain schools.  On the other hand a NPS(NON-Prior Service) applicant will go A School because their first command they attach to is Recruit Training Command which is under the Umbrella of the Center for Naval Education and Training Command(CNET), they are the guys who are given all the funding for all education for the Navy including C schools, OCS, ROTC, etc...
