I know the Coast Guard gets most of there pilots from prior service , or at least thats what i have heard. So i was wondering would the coast guard take me as a helicopter pilot coming from the army national guard? I plan on becoming a helo pilot in the army national guard and go to college at the same time, and once i graduate move onto the coast guard and be a helo pilot. Is that possible.

Could i do it?

Thanks!

  1. Aviator

    There's no doubt about it, this is our "poster" job. It's the job of a Coast Guard aviator. Coast Guard aviators are involved daily in just about all our mission areas including drug interdiction, immigration, marine environmental protection, marine safety, fisheries and general federal laws applicable in the maritime environment.

    The Coast Guard aviation services are provided by approximately 800 aviators and an enlisted workforce of approximately 2500. Our aircrews fly various types of the Coast Guard's inventory of 200+ aircraft dispersed among our 26 Air Stations.

    Qualifications and Application Procedures:

    Be a United States citizen

    Be at least 21 and less than 35 years old (as of September 30 of the application year)

    Meet prescribed physical standards

    Not be on active duty in the military (except USCG) at the time of commissioning; or submit a letter of resignation from your current service with your application

    Have less than 10 years of non-Coast Guard active duty military service and have less than 13 years of previous service creditable for retirement in another armed force or its reserve component

    Must be a graduate of a U.S. military flight training program

    Have full-time military or civilian flight experience within two years of the published application deadline

    Have a Baccalaureate Degree or have completed 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) at an accredited college or university

    Have served a minimum of two years as either a Warrant Officer in the Army or a Commissioned Officer in any of the Armed Forces

    Rotary-wing applicants must present evidence of being a military-rated pilot with a minimum of 500 rotary wing flight hours (not including flight training hours). Fixed-wing applicants must possess evidence of being a military-rated pilot with a minimum of 1,000 hours in a fixed-wing aircraft. Waivers are not authorized for minimum flight hours requirement.

    Present current Class I flight physical (with results of chest x-ray and Coast Guard anthropometric standards)

    Interested applicants should contact a recruiter immediately to allow ample time for eligibility screening and application preparation

    It is still ridiculously competitive.

  3. how about you learn to spell first...the word is THEIR...

    there = over there

    their = their own

    they're = they ARE

    call up the Coast Guard and ask them what they need...or see a recruiter.

  4. I don't see why they wouldn't.

    However, were you a NCO, Warrant Officer or a Commission Officer in the Guard?

    Unlike the Army, Guard, etc., the Coast Guard pretty much has the same standards about this issue as the Navy does:  You have to have a commission.  The last time someone flew aircraft in the Navy that was only a NCO was in 1981.  I forget the guys name but that was the year he retired and no one else in the Navy, etc. has been allowed to since then.

    I personally have never understood why one branch of service allows NCO and WO to fly aircraft and another one doesn't.  You would think it would be the same for all branchs, just like the WO ranks.

    However, whether if you are a NCO or WO, if you want to join the CG, I would at least look into it.  And even if some Petty Officer tells you that you can't, I would still try to get a second opinion, even if it means trying to get a wavier.
