Priscilla Lun surges into Women’s Singles main round of the Canada Open Grand Prix 2011
USA’s Priscilla Lun powered her way into the Women’s Singles main round after taming Canada’s Reshma Bhambhani in the qualifying round of the Canada Open Grand Prix 2011, in Canada, on Tuesday, July 19.
Lun delivered a superb performance throughout the qualifying match as she never lost her focus and remained ahead of Bhambhani in both games. The American won the fight in straight-sets by taking just 24 minutes in the court and spared no chance for the
local shuttler.
In the opening game of this interesting battle, Lun proved her worth by setting up a reasonable lead of 11-8 at the end of the opening part of the set. The Canadian failed to match the accuracy of Lun in the first-half, as she was playing a defensive game
which helped her opponent to dictate the pace of the bird.
After the break, Bhambhani geared up her speed and levelled the score by reaching at 15-15. At this stage, Lun changed her tactics and started to employ strong shots, which helped her in pushing the Canadian on the back foot. The American shutter managed
to win the match with a tight difference of 21-19, in 14 minutes.
In the following game, Lun stunned the local shuttler by employing perfect smashes on the lines of the court, which broke the flow of Bhambhani, who failed to catch up with the speed of the American. Lun dominated in the first-half and reached 11-7 without
working too hard, as her challenger was throwing away points by playing a negative game.
After taking a rest for 60 seconds, Lun accelerated her speed to put Bhambhani under pressure. She was successful in maintaining a good lead throughout the set. The local shuttler could not play up to expectations, despite having the support of local fans.
Lun proved too strong for the Canadian as she played tremendous badminton and finished the second set by a margin of 21-16, in just 10 minutes. The American won the straight-set match in just 24 minutes with a 21-19 and 21-16 score on the board.
