Privacy issues?

my house is on a slight elevation so that the my neighbors on the left can see straight into our yard, which makes me a little uncomfortable when i lay out in my swimming suit. i don't have a privacy fence and don't plan on spending the money on one, so what types of plants could i plant along that fence to give me and my family a little more privacy?

  1. Hi:

I am a landscaper and designer. There are some fast growing evergreen trees that you could put for a privacy backdrop. Of course this will depend what climate zone you live in. Here are a few suggestions:

Leyland Cypress- grows upright and three to four feet a year

Emerald Green Arborvitae - also upright that grows three to four feet a year.

Tea Olive - Osmanthus - fast growing evergreen that has fragrant flowers on and off all year.

Loropetalums - some varieties are tall and pretty fast growers

False Cypress- evergreen tall variegated shrub

These are just a few. I will link you to the gallery of plant section and the variety of plants section of my website. There are many different species that you may be able to use. Good luck to you and have a great day!

  2. There are a lot of VERY fast-growing privacy plants that will cover that area in a short amount of time, and provide you some shade as well.  By fast I mean--a few feet or more a year!  Ask a local nursery.  Often you can buy them 4' or taller and really be sitting pretty by the next season (plants need a year to get established before they do any growing).

  3. Leyland Cypress!  or Bamboo!  Works Great!  Grows Fast!

  4. You are not giving me much to work with here. if you can buy some trees (maple) or you can go with some kind of evergreen and then there are vines that will take time to grow. If you are looking to get something that will be nice  to keep your neighbors from looking on then go with a row of evergreens.

  5. i  don't know what to recommend but you said that you lay out in your swimming suit! if you have a pool be care full what you plant  around it because of the mess. if not try oleanders, plant them about a foot apart.

  6. Much depends on where you live, but arborvitae is a common choice. I would plant that along the property line and then landscape in front of the hedgerow with other plants to make it more appealing.
