I’m not sure what the average yearly salary is, but the going rate is about $75.00 an hour with a 4-hour minimum. The basic equipment needed is a non-descript dependable car, computer, cell phone and/or radio, binoculars, fax machine, map book, audio and video recording devices. What other equipment you may need will depend on the type of investigations you do. The requirements for California are to be over 18 years old, have a minimum of 3 years and 6,000 hours of investigative experience and to pass the state exam.
